Ice Skating Speed Skating Ice Sledding Sledge Hockey

Animated Hockey PlayerSports on ice can be great fun when the slippery stuff allows you to propel yourself around at high speeds. Zipping around with other folks provides a great sense of freedom and comradery. Sure, the ice and snow can be a nuisance on the streets—cold, slick and often treacherous! But around a rink or down a hill, it's a hoot!

Several adapted forms of ice-skating are described below that cover a broad range of possibilities for people with disabilities. See if one looks good to you. Just remember to protect yourself from injury by using the appropriate equipment, and learn to laugh at yourself while you master new skills!

Disabled
Wheelchair Users

Wheelchair users are welcome to take to the ice and join in the fun in their own wheelchair. You must be accompanied by one skater friend at all times for assistance around the ice (this includes motorized wheelchair users). Normal ticket prices apply for yourself but your skater friend will be allowed free admission to the rink when they accompany you.

In the interests of Health & Safety for all users certain sessions may not be available for the use of wheelchairs.

BME Undergrads Make Skating Wheelchair for Hockey Fan, Other Devices for Disabled December 1, 2006

Kuppy Sampale, Eric Blatt and Keigo Kawaji demonstrate their ice skating wheelchair.

A wheelchair on ice is just one of several novel prototypes that biomedical engineering undergraduates presented during a Nov. 2 demonstration of projects designed for the capstone course BME 260: Devices for People with Disabilities.

"It really feels like you're gliding or ice skating when you are using the chair," said Kuppy Sampale, one of the wheelchair's engineers.

A three-member student team created the adapted wheelchair--complete with hockey pad bumpers for collision protection and a "fun appearance"--for a Carolina Hurricanes Fan Club member who is also a quadriplegic. The wheelchair skating design team, which also included Eric Blatt and Keigo Kawaji, consulted with a wheelchair expert and conducted their own videotaped crash testing to ensure the safety of their design.

Notes
The Ice Skating program gives disabled individuals the freedom felt when gliding across the ice. The program uses adaptive equipment to assist those with a decreased ability to balance and participants in wheelchairs enjoy sliding across the ice on their wheels. As an added bonus, many players on Bozeman's local hockey team the "Icedogs" volunteer with the program adding to the enjoyment of the participants. The ice skating program allows large groups of participants to enjoy the program together, greatly enhancing the social atmosphere.

The winter event is growing slowly, and it's small compared with the Summer Paralympics, which has 18 medal events from archery to volleyball and had, in Sydney in 2000, a turnout of 100,000 fans. As the winter event grows, new sports are being added: the 2006 Paralympics, in Torino, Italy, will also feature ice racing and wheelchair ice dancing, and may include wheelchair curling.
